about
"like with Danny Brown, House Shoes was my introduction to Quelle. in the same Barham Blvd apartment where he introduced me to Danny, Shoes let me hold two CD-R’s over Christmas. the two jewel cases had drawn-on paper sleeves, one of them read Blue Mondays and the other was personalized to Shoes. I was floored. this cat sounded like nobody else. he could do straight-ahead rappity-rap, introspective and emotional joints and apparently he made beats too! I posted a couple of songs on my blog at the time and kept a few select tunes in constant rotation, one of which was the Roberta Flack-sampling joint called “Sugar Honey Iced Tea.”
life kept moving and I didn’t think much about Quelle except when a song came on in my iTunes. then I got word Quelle had moved to Oakland, about two hours away from where I was staying at the time. I reached out and it was like reconnecting with an old friend. we did hoodrat things together on both sides of the Bay Bridge and once in awhile he’d play me some rap music.
when I started this project I knew I wanted Quelle to be involved. he didn’t take much convincing but it did take a minute to settle on the right song. initially I was going with “Sugar Honey Iced Tea,” to date it’s still one of my favorite pieces of music Quelle has ever produced but unfortunately, an incident in Chicago lead to the loss of heaps of fantastic music that could no longer be properly released. all he had left of “Sugar Honey Iced Tea” was a 128 kbps mp3. we were toying with the idea of including a joint from his Awesome In Outerspace series, but ultimately I realized I really wanted Quelle rapping on the project.
we hit a standstill and dropped the subject just as Quelle discovered Knxwledge and Dibia$e. He began to cut records with them, some of which would end up on the first volume of 2Dirt4TV. that was just an appetizer. Quelle finished the better part of a full LP helmed almost entirely by Knx and Dibi, and though a series of derailments and delays kept that album from seeing the light of day, I managed to snag “Quantize” for this project."
