"I met Mike Chav through Jay Electronica. The first time we spoke, he shared how he and Johnny Audible built J Dilla’s studio in Detroit from scratch. a quick search on
discogs.com shows Chav’s impressive body of work with people like Amp Fiddler, Erykah Badu, Mr. Porter, Snoop Dogg, Guilty Simpson and more.
though he’s best known for being a phenomenal mixing engineer, Chav is a talented producer and musician as well. over the years he’s passed me along selections of his music. “when the time comes” is a track from the very first batch of tracks he ever gave me, maybe as far back as 2008. the folder he sent had lush beats and song-ready compositions but I always found myself going back to this track.
in under two minutes, with minimal instrumentation and no vocals, Chav creates a romantic and bittersweet world I still get lost in more than five years after first hearing it. there was a version of this with a woman singing, but I feel this one is stronger."
